6th Religion – (Loyola) - 6 th grade focuses on the study of the Bible starting with the Old Testament. Lenten project - Jesus of Nazareth – students keep a daily journal of the movie, write a reflective paper, and make a booklet of events found in the Gospels. Family Life is studied during 4 th quarter. The 6 th graders also learn all the prayers of the rosary and the 4 mysteries of the rosary – we pray the rosary on a daily basis.
6th English – (Loyola) – curriculum includes grammar, mechanics, and writing skills. Notes and examples are given with each lesson – exercises are completed from the text and worksheets. Review sheets are given before tests. Poetry, seasonal and cross-curricular writing activities from a variety of sources are also included.
6th Spelling – A lesson is introduced on Monday. Students work independently to complete 4 workbook pages by Friday. Written test on Friday.
5th and 6th Reading - (Scott Foresman) – With this series, each selection focuses on a reading strategy/skill and vocabulary. Before each story, students copy vocabulary and definitions into their notebooks. Vocabulary is reinforced with a workbook page and an extra credit writing exercise. The reading strategy/skill is reinforced with two workbook pages. The vocabulary lesson, skill lesson and main selection are all on CD so the students can listen as they read along in their texts. All selections are followed by a multiple choice test and often times a comprehension questions test. Comprehension questions must be answered in complete sentences. Each unit is followed by a skills test. The 6 th graders also read a novel.
Accelerated Reader – the entire school participates in the Accelerated Reader Program. In 6 th grade students are required to read 4 books per quarter and pass the quizzes.
Free Reading – students in grades 5-8 are required to have a free reading book at all times. On Fridays the students are given a free reading class period. The students are required to keep a free reading journal with a separate entry for each class period. These are collected and graded quarterly.
7th and 8th Literature - (Prentice Hall) – the literature books are divided into sections by genre. Students read from a variety of selections with the emphasis on short stories. Notes are given with each selection. Written response follows each selection as well as skills worksheets and a multiple choice test. Essays in response to the literature are also a part of the curriculum. The 7 th and 8 th graders read novels in addition to the selections from the text. |
